Understanding the essential role of MRI in cancer detection can empower patients and their families during challenging times.
How MRI Detects Cancer
MRI uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of the body's internal structures. These images are then interpreted by our radiologists to assess any abnormalities or changes in tissues that may indicate cancer.
MRI is becoming more popular as a first-line screening tool for cancer. It is highly effective in detecting and monitoring certain types of cancers, such as brain tumors, breast, prostate, liver, and spinal cord tumors. This non-invasive imaging technique helps guide biopsy procedures and monitor treatment response.
Advantages of Using MRI for Cancer Detection
MRI offers several advantages over other imaging techniques in detecting cancer, including:
- Multi-dimensional images: MRI produces highly detailed images that can show the size, shape, and location of tumors from different angles.
- Soft tissue visualization: Unlike X-rays, MRI is excellent at differentiating between healthy soft tissues and abnormal growths. This makes it ideal for diagnosing cancers in organs such as the brain, breast, and prostate.
- Safe radiation levels: Since MRI machines do not use ionizing radiation like X-rays or CT scans, it is considered a safer option for patients, particularly children and pregnant women.
- Improved accuracy: MRI can detect even small changes in tissues, allowing for earlier detection of cancer. This can lead to earlier treatment and improved outcomes.
When Is MRI Used for Cancer Detection?
MRI scan may be recommended by your doctor if other imaging tests have been inconclusive or if there are specific concerns about cancer. It may also be used as part of regular follow-up monitoring after treatment to ensure that the cancer has not returned or spread to other areas.
However, not all types of cancers can be detected using MRI. Your doctor will consider various factors such as the type and location of the suspected cancer, your medical history, and any previous imaging results before recommending an MRI.
What To Expect Before, During, & After The MRI Scan?
At Smart Scan Medical Imaging, we utilize the advanced GE 1.5 Tesla wide-bore MRI scanner to deliver precise cancer diagnostics.
Before the Scan
- You will be asked to change into a hospital gown provided by Smart Scan and remove any metal items.
- Please inform our staff if you have any metallic implants or devices in your body, as these can disrupt the MRI's magnetic field.
- If you experience any anxiety, let our staff know so our friendly staff can assist you in feeling more relaxed during the procedure.
During the Scan
- You will lie down on a table that smoothly slides into our wide-bore MRI scanner.
- MRI machines generate loud, rhythmic sounds, so you will be provided with earplugs or headphones to dampen the noise and enjoy some music.
- Throughout the scan, our staff will be in constant communication with you, and you can reach out to them anytime if needed.
- It's important to remain still while the machine captures images of your body. The exam usually lasts between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on the specific type of MRI being conducted.
After the Scan
- After the scan is complete, you can immediately return to your normal activities without any downtime.
- Our radiologist will carefully review the MRI images, and a comprehensive report will be sent to your doctor to assist in accurate cancer diagnosis and treatment planning—all included in the scan's price!
